Max Verstappen has moved to clarify his long-term plans in Formula 1, insisting he remains committed to Red Bull beyond the 2026 season while dismissing speculation about a switch to Mercedes.
Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the reigning world champion addressed the swirling rumours that have linked him with a potential move to the Silver Arrows for the new engine era. “I’ve got a contract with Red Bull until 2028, and that’s where my focus is,” Verstappen said. “Talk about Mercedes or anywhere else? It’s just noise. I’m happy where I am, pushing for more titles.”
The Dutch driver’s comments come amid a turbulent period for Red Bull, with internal tensions and performance dips prompting questions about his future. Recent reports, including from sources close to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, suggested advanced discussions had taken place, but Verstappen laughed off the idea. “People say a lot of things, but actions speak louder. I’m not going anywhere soon.”
Verstappen, who secured his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship in 2024, also touched on life after F1. “Racing is my passion, but I won’t be doing this forever,” he admitted. “Maybe sim racing or something else when the time comes, but that’s way off. Right now, it’s all about winning with this team.”
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko echoed the sentiment, reminding that Verstappen’s deal is ironclad. “He has a valid contract, and we’re building our future around him,” Marko stated.
For now, the 27-year-old is locked in a tight battle this season, sitting second in the standings behind McLaren’s Lando Norris after 12 races. With the Hungarian Grand Prix next on the calendar, Verstappen aims to close the gap and silence any remaining doubters.
