Russell’s ‘Conflicting’ Mercedes Admission; Verstappen: ‘It’s Time’

George Russell has moved to clarify his future at Mercedes, insisting that speculation about his seat has been overblown despite ongoing links to Max Verstappen.

The British driver, whose current deal runs until the end of this season, revealed that initial talks with team boss Toto Wolff hit a snag over mismatched ambitions. “Our goals weren’t fully in sync at first,” Russell said ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. “But we’ve ironed that out now, and things are progressing well.”

This comes amid reports that Mercedes had been in discussions with Red Bull’s Verstappen for a potential 2026 switch, fueled by unrest at the Milton Keynes squad. However, Verstappen has reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull through 2028, effectively closing the door on a move.

Russell dismissed fears of being sidelined, pointing the finger at media hype. “It was never a real threat,” he stated. “The press turned it into something bigger than it was. I’ve always been confident in my position here.”

Sources close to the team indicate a multi-year extension is nearing completion, potentially worth around £30 million annually, securing Russell alongside whoever fills the second seat—currently held by Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari next year.

With Andrea Kimi Antonelli tipped as a rising star in Mercedes’ junior program, the team appears focused on stability. Russell’s recent form, including a win at the Austrian Grand Prix, has strengthened his case.
