The Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session delivered unexpected drama as Aston Martin emerged as formidable contenders. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who had struggled at Spa-Francorchamps only a week prior, showcased a remarkable turnaround to secure fifth and sixth positions on the grid. This performance was a testament to the unique characteristics of the Hungaroring, which favored Aston Martin’s setup.
Alonso attributed the team’s improved performance to the track’s high-downforce demands, which complemented their car’s design. “Just the layout, the characteristics of the circuit, is suiting our car, apparently,” Alonso explained. This strategic advantage was evident as Alonso finished a mere 0.109 seconds behind pole-sitter Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, with Stroll close behind.
Despite their strong starting positions, Alonso remains cautious about maintaining this advantage during the race, especially with the likes of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton starting from behind. “We need to understand as well that there are some threats from behind,” he noted, recognizing the challenge ahead.
The weekend also saw Alonso overcoming a minor muscular injury sustained at Spa, which had sidelined him for the first practice session in Hungary. Nevertheless, his determination to compete paid off, providing him a chance to capitalize on the team’s strategic gains.
Aston Martin’s progress, highlighted by Alonso’s use of a previous-spec floor on his AMR25, underscores their confidence in the car’s development path. “I’m quite happy, and I feel the team is happy with all the upgrades we brought this year,” Alonso stated, dismissing any concerns about recent updates.
As the race approaches, Aston Martin aims to convert their promising qualifying results into substantial points, hoping to leverage the lessons learned at the Hungaroring for future success.
