Helmut Marko’s concerning revelation as Red Bull’s advantage shrinks

Red Bull Racing’s recent struggles were starkly highlighted during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying sessions, leaving the team scrambling for answers. Max Verstappen, typically a frontrunner in the Formula 1 circuit, found himself in an uncharacteristic eighth place after the final qualifying session. This position marked a significant improvement from his 14th place standing in Friday’s second practice, yet it was clear that the reigning champion and his team were far from satisfied.

Helmut Marko, the seasoned Red Bull motorsport advisor, candidly acknowledged the team’s difficulties, noting that “something is not right.” Despite managing to “narrow” the gap in Q3, the team’s performance was still underwhelming, particularly given Verstappen’s use of worn tyres to clock his fastest lap.

The weekend at Hungaroring presented a series of challenges for Red Bull, with Yuki Tsunoda, Verstappen’s teammate, failing to progress beyond Q1, ending in 16th place. The team’s difficulties were exacerbated by a pervasive lack of grip, which both drivers cited as a critical issue throughout the sessions.

Marko, however, remains optimistic. He pointed out the unpredictable nature of the sport, especially after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc clinched a surprise pole position, disrupting McLaren’s dominance in the practice sessions. Marko suggested that the cooler temperatures had played a role in reshaping the competitive landscape, leading to unexpected outcomes.

Looking ahead to the race, Marko speculated that tire strategy could be a deciding factor. With the potential for either a one-stop or two-stop strategy, and considering last year’s successful one-stop result for Tsunoda, the race remains wide open. The unpredictability of Formula 1, coupled with the strategic possibilities at play, leaves Red Bull hopeful for a turnaround on race day, despite the setbacks experienced during the qualifying rounds.
