Alonso Injury Doubt: Aston Names Replacement Driver

Fernando Alonso will skip the first practice session at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix after picking up a back injury, Aston Martin confirmed on Friday.

The two-time world champion, who turned 44 earlier this week, felt discomfort following a recent training session. Team officials say he’s undergoing treatment and will be assessed before qualifying, but they’ve already lined up reserve driver Felipe Drugovich to take over for FP1 at the Hungaroring.

Drugovich, the 2022 Formula 2 champion from Brazil, has tested extensively for Aston Martin and could step in for the full race if Alonso isn’t cleared to drive. This marks the latest setback for the veteran Spaniard in a challenging 2025 season, where he’s yet to score points after early retirements in Australia and Japan.

Aston Martin hopes Alonso can return for FP2 later today, with the team pushing for upgrades to climb the midfield battle. The Hungarian round, the 13th of the year, kicks off under sunny skies, but Alonso’s fitness remains the big question mark.
