Clarkson Backs Verstappen in Russell Spat

Jeremy Clarkson has slammed the FIA’s handling of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, calling out race director Niels Wittich for an 80-minute delay that he believes robbed fans of proper wet-weather action.

The former Top Gear host, known for his blunt takes on motorsport, vented on social media after heavy rain pushed back the race start. “What a joke,” Clarkson posted. “These drivers are the best in the world, paid millions to handle tough conditions. But the director chickens out over a bit of spray? Fans deserve better than this nanny-state nonsense.”

His comments echoed frustrations from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who felt the hold-up was overcautious. Speaking post-race, the four-time champion said the FIA could have green-lit the start sooner, especially after drivers had pushed for more care following visibility issues at Silverstone earlier this season. “We talked about being cautious, but this went too far,” Verstappen noted. “The track was ready earlier.”

Mercedes driver George Russell, however, sided with the officials. He highlighted the dangers of racing blind in downpours at Spa’s high-speed sections like Eau Rouge. “At over 200mph, you can’t see a thing—it’s not racing, it’s reckless,” Russell explained. “With the track’s history, including fatalities in 2019 and 2023, safety has to come first.”

The delay stemmed from ongoing concerns after Anthoine Hubert and Dilano van ‘t Hoff lost their lives in wet conditions at the circuit. Despite the wait, the race eventually ran under improving skies, with Verstappen finishing strong but Russell voicing disappointment over his team’s pace dip.

Clarkson’s outburst has sparked debate online, pitting thrill-seekers against those prioritizing driver welfare in F1’s unpredictable weather battles.
