Guenther Steiner Reveals Why Max Verstappen Remained with Red Bull

Max Verstappen’s decision to remain with Red Bull Racing into the 2026 Formula 1 season has put a definitive end to swirling rumors of a potential switch to Mercedes. As the sport braces for sweeping regulatory changes, the Dutch driver’s choice underscores the uncertainty that permeates the paddock regarding which team will thrive under the new rules.

Guenther Steiner, reflecting on Verstappen’s commitment, highlighted the unpredictable nature of the upcoming season. “With the new regulations, no one can confidently say which team will excel,” Steiner noted. “For Max, the risk of joining another team that might not interpret the new chassis and engine regulations effectively was too significant.”

Verstappen, who has become synonymous with Red Bull’s recent successes, affirmed his intention to stay with the team just ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. His decision was possibly influenced by the departure of long-time team principal Christian Horner, but ultimately, Steiner believes it is the looming uncertainty of the 2026 season that played a pivotal role.

Red Bull’s latest venture as an engine manufacturer, in collaboration with Ford, adds another layer of intrigue to their 2026 prospects. This strategic move represents a bold step for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, which has seen its dominance wane slightly over the past year.

Despite the challenges, Steiner is optimistic about Red Bull’s future. “They have a robust infrastructure and skilled personnel,” he elaborated. “While every team faces the same learning curve with the new regulations, Red Bull’s track record suggests they will be formidable contenders.”

Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull extends until 2028, yet the four-time World Champion remains reticent about speculating beyond the immediate future. “For me, it’s about focusing on performance,” he stated, sidestepping questions about his long-term plans.

As Formula 1 eagerly anticipates the dawn of a new regulatory era, Verstappen’s calculated decision to stay with Red Bull reflects not only loyalty but also a strategic gamble on stability amid the sport’s inherent unpredictability.
