Liam Lawson reveals new potential in Red Bull-Ford partnership

Liam Lawson, the prodigious talent from New Zealand, recently made headlines at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, showcasing his remarkable adaptability and skill in an unfamiliar arena: rally driving. With no prior experience behind the wheel of a rally car, Lawson was tasked with a formidable challenge—matching the lap time of a seasoned World Rally Championship driver within a mere five attempts.

The challenge, set on the intricate and unforgiving Goodwood Rally Stage, required Lawson to come within 15 seconds of a lap time benchmark set by M-Sport Ford’s Josh McErlean, a seasoned competitor in rally circuits. Armed with the formidable WRC Rally 1 Ford Puma, Lawson’s mission was not for the faint-hearted. The circuit’s narrow paths, flanked by trees and slippery surfaces, added to the complexity of the task.

Lawson’s initial encounter with the rally car was nothing short of eye-opening, as evidenced by his candid reactions during a reconnaissance lap with McErlean. Despite initial setbacks, including stalling out of the gate, Lawson quickly acclimated. Demonstrating remarkable composure and adaptability, he managed to clock an impressive 2:36.25 on his first lap, narrowing the gap to McErlean’s time significantly.

As he progressed, his lap times improved dramatically, culminating in a remarkable 2:27.25 by his final attempt—just a hair’s breadth away from McErlean’s 2:26.75. This near-feat underscored Lawson’s exceptional potential and left spectators astounded by his rapid learning curve and inherent racing instinct.

This rally stint comes amid a year of ups and downs for Lawson. After a brief demotion from the main Red Bull Formula 1 team, he has showcased resilience and determination, amassing commendable points back with Racing Bulls. His performance at Goodwood not only highlights his versatility across different racing disciplines but also positions him as a promising figure in motorsports, capable of transcending traditional racing boundaries.
