Mekies: Red Bull Craves Verstappen’s Winning Magic

Laurent Mekies steps into his second year leading RB, the Red Bull sister squad, with a clear focus on growth amid high expectations. Speaking ahead of the 2025 season opener, the former Ferrari engineer opened up about the challenges of building on last year’s progress, where the team finished sixth in the constructors’ standings.

Mekies, who replaced Franz Tost at the end of 2023, admits the role comes with built-in pressure. “You’re always compared to the main team,” he said, referring to Red Bull’s dominance. “But our job is to carve our own path while sharing resources smartly.” He stressed that RB isn’t just a feeder outfit anymore—it’s pushing for consistent points and podiums, especially with the 2026 rules looming.

On drivers, Mekies praised Yuki Tsunoda’s speed and maturity, now in his fifth season. “Yuki’s adapted well; he’s a key asset.” Pairing him is Liam Lawson, the young New Zealander who impressed in his 2024 cameos. “Liam brings fresh energy—we’re giving him the tools to shine,” Mekies noted, hinting at internal development programs to nurture talent.

Reflecting on his Ferrari exit, Mekies explained it was about seeking a lead role. “I loved my time there, but this chance to shape a team from the ground up was too good to pass.” He dismissed any regrets, focusing instead on RB’s aero upgrades and simulator work over the winter.

As the grid tightens with Mercedes and McLaren resurgent, Mekies remains grounded. “We’re not chasing miracles, just steady gains. The mission is clear: compete harder, learn faster, and deliver for our fans.” With testing wrapped and Australia on the horizon, RB looks set to punch above its weight.
