Martin Brundle has voiced doubts over Mercedes’ choice to fast-track Kimi Antonelli into their front-line seat for his Formula 1 debut, calling it a potential misstep that could hinder the young Italian’s growth.

The Sky Sports commentator, speaking after the Belgian Grand Prix, suggested that placing the 18-year-old rookie alongside seasoned teammate George Russell right from the start might overwhelm him. “Why not ease him in at a team like Williams or Sauber?” Brundle asked, pointing out how such a move could let Antonelli build experience without the intense scrutiny of a top outfit.

Antonelli, who stepped up from Formula 2 to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes this season, has shown flashes of speed—including a Sprint pole in Miami and a podium in Canada—but has also faced setbacks, like crashes and qualifying errors that have drawn criticism.
