Mercedes have uncovered fresh insights from their Belgian Grand Prix data, revealing that George Russell’s car suffered no lasting hit from gravel kicked up during Sprint Qualifying.
The incident unfolded when team-mate Kimi Antonelli slid off track, scattering debris that Russell believed damaged his W16. He pointed to this as a possible reason for his underwhelming pace at Spa-Francorchamps, where he started sixth and finished fifth in the main race.
But after poring over telemetry back at Brackley, engineers found the gravel caused no measurable drop in performance. “The numbers don’t lie,” a team source said. “George’s lap times held steady, and aero checks showed everything intact.”
Russell, who has two wins under his belt this season, had labelled the weekend Mercedes’ weakest of 2025 so far. He urged a return to earlier setups after upgrades failed to deliver against Red Bull and McLaren.
Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the frustration but stressed the data’s role in guiding fixes. “We’re not chasing shadows,” he noted. “This clears one theory, so we focus on real gains before Zandvoort.”
Antonelli, in his rookie year, escaped penalty for the off but faces pressure to sharpen up. Mercedes sit third in the constructors’ standings, trailing Ferrari, as the summer break looms.
