Rivals Rewritten: Verstappen Hails Hamilton’s First Win in Red

Max Verstappen didn’t sound remotely surprised by what Lewis Hamilton pulled off in Barcelona. Impressed, yes — but not surprised.

In the aftermath of Hamilton’s first Grand Prix victory as a Ferrari driver, Verstappen was quick to offer a public nod. The Red Bull man, fourth on the road and a distant 40 seconds behind the winner, posted a short message that managed to be both on-brand and telling: a “lonely race”, a maximised result, and a straight congratulations to Hamilton for his “first win in red”.

It’s the kind of sentence that would’ve felt unthinkable at the height of their 2021 hostility, but Formula 1 has a way of sanding down even the sharpest edges when time, titles and context move on. In parc fermé, Verstappen also made a point of seeking Hamilton out. Asked what he said, the answer was as simple as it was definitive: “Well done. Congratulations.”

What’s more interesting is what came next. Verstappen didn’t lean into any of the background noise or the obvious storylines; he went straight to the human bit.

“It’s always super special to win,” he said. “Even when you’ve won already so much, to win with Ferrari for the first time, I think it’s always a special moment.”

That matters because, in 2026, there’s no shortage of reasons for the paddock to talk itself into cynicism. New regulations, new pecking orders, and a season that had, until Barcelona, been locked behind Mercedes victories. Hamilton’s win didn’t just end that streak — it made him the first non-Mercedes winner of the year, and it did it with the most emotionally loaded colour scheme in modern Grand Prix racing.

It also tightened the championship story around him. The 41-year-old’s Barcelona triumph strengthened his grip on second in the standings, though he remains 41 points behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who suffered his first retirement of the campaign in Spain. For Hamilton, it was also win number 106 — another extension of a record he’d already pushed beyond anyone else’s reach, and his first since his final season at Mercedes in 2024.

There was an understated generosity in Verstappen’s reaction, but also a hard-edged honesty. Red Bull didn’t have the pace to get involved at the sharp end on Sunday; even Verstappen framed it as damage limitation. And while social media can be performative, there’s a difference between ticking a PR box and recognising a rival’s moment when you see one.

Ferrari’s own hierarchy certainly treated it as a moment. Chairman John Elkann issued a statement celebrating the win in language that will have been catnip to the tifosi — “an emotional moment and a very important result” — while framing it as something earned collectively, by the race team and by Maranello alike.

Elkann also widened the lens beyond Barcelona, thanking Ferrari’s other squad on the same day that the marque’s run of success at the Le Mans 24 Hours came to an end at Toyota’s hands. The contrast was striking: one Ferrari programme tasting a fresh kind of joy, the other absorbing the bruises of a 24-hour fight that didn’t go their way.

That’s Ferrari in a nutshell, really — a brand big enough to live several sporting lives at once, sometimes in harmony, sometimes in tension. On a day when their endurance operation lost its aura of inevitability, the F1 team found a new one.

For Verstappen, though, Barcelona was less about Ferrari’s symbolism and more about the purity of the act. Win in a new set-up, win with a new badge on your chest, win after you’ve already won everything — it still lands. It still matters. And from one serial winner to another, he seemed to recognise that immediately.

The rivalry that once consumed Formula 1 doesn’t need to be rekindled to make these moments meaningful. In 2026, it’s something subtler: respect without softness, praise without nostalgia, and an acknowledgement that some victories carry a weight the stopwatch can’t measure.
