Rosberg Warns of Wolff’s ‘Horrible’ Negotiation Tactic

Nico Rosberg has lifted the lid on Toto Wolff’s tough approach to contract talks, warning George Russell that the Mercedes boss often goes silent to ramp up pressure on drivers.

Speaking on Sky Sports F1 after the Belgian Grand Prix, the 2016 world champion drew from his own time at the team, calling Wolff “horrible” to deal with. “He just disappears,” Rosberg said. “You send him a WhatsApp, and he doesn’t reply for three weeks. It’s a tactic to make you sweat.”

Russell, whose current Mercedes deal runs out at the end of 2025, faces a critical moment. Fresh off a disqualification from his Spa victory due to an underweight car, the British driver admitted no new agreement is imminent before the summer break. “We’re not in a massive rush,” he told reporters, though he hopes to sort things soon.

Wolff, meanwhile, played down any drama, insisting talks with Russell are progressing smoothly. But Rosberg’s comments highlight the mind games at play, especially as Mercedes eyes its lineup for 2026 amid new regulations.

With Kimi Antonelli tipped as a potential teammate and Max Verstappen still a long-shot target, Russell’s strong season—including poles and podiums—could strengthen his hand. Yet Rosberg reckons Wolff’s vanishing act might test the 27-year-old’s patience.
