Russell, Antonelli Dish on Mercedes Contract Saga

George Russell has played down speculation about Max Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes, insisting he’s secure in his seat for the 2025 Formula 1 season and beyond. Speaking ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the British driver highlighted his contract with the team runs until the end of next year, and he’s focused on delivering results rather than worrying about rivals.

“I’m not losing sleep over who sits in the other car,” Russell said. “If it’s Max or anyone else, that’s fine by me. My job is to perform, and I’ve got faith in Mercedes’ direction.”

The comments come amid ongoing rumours linking Verstappen to a shock switch from Red Bull, where he’s contracted until 2028. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has openly courted the Dutch driver, especially after Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari opened a vacancy.

Stepping into Hamilton’s shoes is 18-year-old Italian prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who’s already signed for Mercedes in 2025. Antonelli, currently honing his skills in Formula 2, addressed the pressure of replacing a seven-time world champion.

“It’s a huge step, but I’m ready,” Antonelli told reporters. “Talks with the team are straightforward – they want me focused on learning and contributing. No drama, just hard work.”

Russell praised his incoming teammate, noting Antonelli’s rapid rise through the junior ranks. “Kimi’s got serious talent. We’ve tested together, and he’s quick. It’ll be a strong lineup.”

With the 2025 grid shaping up – Hamilton at Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc, and other moves like Nico Hulkenberg to Sauber – Mercedes aims to rebound from recent struggles. Russell believes the team’s upgrades, including engine tweaks for the new regulations, will help close the gap to Red Bull.

For now, both drivers are keeping their eyes on the current campaign, with Russell sitting fifth in the standings and Mercedes third in the constructors’ battle.
