Verstappen’s ‘Unacceptable’ Downshifts Expose Red Bull’s Software Gamble

Max Verstappen didn’t need many laps in Friday’s second practice at Spa to make his mood clear. Mid-run, the Red Bull radio crackled with an unusually blunt complaint about the RB22’s downshifts — “unacceptable”, in Verstappen’s words — the sort of outburst that lands not because it’s performative, but because it sounds like something genuinely interfering with how he wants to drive the car.

What’s interesting is that it wasn’t framed as a mystery mechanical gremlin or a vague “something feels off” grumble. Verstappen pointed the finger at a software change: an update — he even joked it might’ve been a “downgrade” — that left the car needing time to “learn” its way back to cleaner shifts. By the end of the session, he said it had started to improve.

If that sounds like Verstappen being Verstappen, that’s because it is. He’s always been hypersensitive to the way a car behaves on corner entry, particularly when he’s leaning on engine braking and expects a consistent response. In a normal weekend, a slight harshness on downshift is irritating; at Spa in 2026, with energy management expected to be pushed harder than ever, it’s the kind of detail that can bleed lap time in places you don’t notice until you put the qualifying simulation together.

And that’s where Red Bull’s day settled into something more sober than the FP1 headline suggested. Verstappen topped the opening session and there was a hint of early optimism around the garage — the sort that tends to crop up whenever the car looks responsive through the middle sector and the driver’s carrying speed with minimal correction.

FP2 was a cleaner reference point. On the soft-tyre runs, Verstappen ended up just inside half a second away from Kimi Antonelli’s pacesetting lap. That margin didn’t send Verstappen into a spiral; if anything, his read was pragmatic. He described the RB22 as being “quite in a good window” and said the gap, once FP2 revealed the “real” picture, was “nothing shocking” — in other words, broadly in line with what he’d anticipated coming into the weekend.

The rub, as he told it, is that Spa is currently punishing in two directions at once. You need the car to sit nicely on its platform through the fast stuff, but you also need enough straight-line efficiency to stop bleeding time between corners. Verstappen’s feeling was that Red Bull is giving something away on the straights compared to “some of our competitors”, even if the underlying balance is largely where he wants it.

That’s the part Red Bull can live with on Friday. A car that’s fundamentally in its window is workable; a car with an erratic interface between driver and drivetrain is harder to ignore. Those downshifts matter because they’re not just an annoyance — they shape how aggressively Verstappen can attack braking zones, how confidently he can rotate the car, and how repeatable the lap is when he’s trying to thread together Spa’s sequences without compromising the following straight.

Verstappen didn’t paint it as a terminal issue. He made it sound like a calibration story: the kind of software behaviour that can settle down once the parameters are re-optimised and the system has cycled through enough running. “Some bits were working well, and then sometimes it wasn’t working,” he summarised, before coming back to the key point: overall, the RB22 is in a “decent window”.

Still, it’s a reminder of where the sharp edges appear in modern F1. This isn’t 2016, where a clunky downshift meant a gearbox change and a long night. It’s 2026, where you can arrive with a software tweak that looks fine in theory, then discover that in the hands of someone as precise — and as demanding — as Verstappen, the car’s responses no longer match the muscle memory that makes him so devastating over a lap.

Spa has a way of exposing that mismatch quickly. And Verstappen, typically, didn’t wait for a debrief to say so.
