Norris Blinks, Piastri Roars: McLaren Locks Out Qatar

Qatar GP: McLaren locks out the front row as Piastri nails pole and keeps title flame burning

Oscar Piastri isn’t done yet. Under the Lusail lights, the McLaren driver stuck his sixth pole of the season and followed up a sprint win with a statement Saturday, edging teammate Lando Norris after the Briton fluffed his final attempt. It’s the penultimate qualifying of 2025, the pressure’s white‑hot, and Piastri is meeting the moment.

Norris had the speed but blinked first, sliding wide early in his last lap and conceding track position. The orange cars look at home through Qatar’s fast, loaded corners, and behind them Max Verstappen could only slot into third, the Red Bull a step off in single-lap punch. George Russell leads the Mercedes charge in fourth, while Kimi Antonelli quietly turned in another composed, grown‑up qualifying for P5. The kid’s learning fast.

Isack Hadjar continues to be the season’s handy surprise package; P6 for Racing Bulls is real territory for points if he gets through the first lap cleanly. Carlos Sainz, now a Williams talisman, lines up seventh with every chance to spoil the party on race pace, while Fernando Alonso lurks in eighth — and there’s never been a driver more dangerous from the edges of the top 10 when the strategy window cracks open.

Pierre Gasly dragged the Alpine into ninth, and Charles Leclerc starts 10th for Ferrari after a muted session for the Scuderia. On the other side of the red garage, Lewis Hamilton faces a long night from 18th. It’s been one of those Saturdays for Ferrari: glimpses of speed, not enough of the lap.

Nico Hülkenberg continues to be Sauber’s reliable barometer in 11th, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto lines up 14th, and the field’s youth movement is everywhere you look: Oliver Bearman P13 for Haas, Franco Colapinto starting P20 for Alpine. Liam Lawson (12th) and Yuki Tsunoda (16th) split the Racing Bulls/Red Bull picture neatly, while Esteban Ocon sits 17th in the Haas with work to do.

The intrigue for Sunday? McLaren’s front-row lockout loads the pressure squarely on its own pit wall. Do they let their pair race with a title on the line, or does the call come early? Verstappen from P3 is still Verstappen — if he’s in range into Turn 1, he’ll have a look — and Mercedes has both Russell and Antonelli in striking distance to complicate McLaren’s life on strategy. Qatar’s long corners punish front tyres, the wind can turn a lap on its head, and track position at sunset tends to be king by midnight.

Piastri arrived in Qatar needing a big one and delivered. Now he has to convert. Norris won’t be gifting anything, Verstappen never does, and the race has a habit of breaking wide open if the undercut bites. Buckle up.
