Alonso’s 2025 Dilemma: Briatore Eyes Top Teams for a Shock Switch

Flavio Briatore, the strategic mind behind Fernando Alonso’s illustrious career, is already deep into scouting the paddock for opportunities in 2025. With the motorsport community still buzzing over Lewis Hamilton’s impending departure from Mercedes, Alonso’s future has become a topic of intense speculation.

Alonso, whose contract with Aston Martin is drawing to a close, seems hesitant to recommit without a clear vision for competitiveness. This hesitation comes against a backdrop of Aston Martin’s struggles to breach the ranks of the top teams—a goal that remains elusive as Alonso himself highlighted the gap to the front-runners: “The first race of the confirms that there are still four teams in front of us,” Alonso shared with DAZN, reflecting on their positioning behind McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull from the season’s outset.

Despite a promising P6 qualifying position in Bahrain, a reality check came on race day with a slip to P9. Alonso’s candid assessment, “Qualifying did not put us in a situation that was real,” and his observation, “In the race we saw the reality,” underscore the challenges faced. The Spaniard pointed out the tangible gap to their competitors, noting, “I think I was 18 seconds behind the McLarens and the Saubers were 28 seconds behind,” before concluding, “Once you see that you can’t beat those in front of you, you have to accept that those three or four tenths are missing.”

Yet, Alonso remains optimistic about the season’s prospects, drawing parallels to McLaren’s previous improvements and expressing hope for Aston Martin’s progression: “up to us to take the kind of step like the one McLaren took in the middle of last year.” He reminisces about the team’s strong start the previous year and the potential for growth, “Last year we started very strong and then we couldn’t keep up with the pace of development of the big teams,” expressing confidence in their base for incremental advancements.

In the grand scheme of Alonso’s career, Briatore’s presence in Bahrain was more than just a familiar face; it was a statement of intent. “We are working and looking for the best future option for Fernando,” Briatore confirmed, signaling a proactive approach to navigating Alonso’s next steps amidst the evolving F1 landscape.

As the F1 community speculates on Alonso’s future, the combination of his undiminished drive, Briatore’s managerial acumen, and the shifting dynamics within the sport sets the stage for a fascinating 2025 season narrative.
