Beyond burnout: Hamilton’s emotional journey through world events

Formula 1 drivers are often seen as insulated from the world’s turmoil, cocooned in a bubble of racing circuits and podium celebrations. However, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, known for his outspokenness on certain political issues, now shares his thoughts on the challenges of maintaining focus amidst global instability – especially the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Speaking to Arab News in Abu Dhabi, Hamilton reflected on the impact of such global events. “Absolutely, how can you not? I think it’s been a very strange period for us because we are in such a bubble here. We arrive at all these different places and there’s so much positivity in our little bubble,” he said. But beyond this bubble, he acknowledges a harsher reality: “And this year, it’s difficult to wake up each day knowing there are thousands of kids dying and there’s nothing you can do about it and the rest of the world just goes on as it is.”

His comments come at a time when Formula 1 has faced criticism for its silence on the Israel-Gaza war, despite widespread western protests and outcry. Hamilton’s perspective offers a rare glimpse into the mindset of an F1 driver confronting such global crises.

The conversation also veered towards the grueling nature of the current F1 season. With a hectic 23-race schedule and a challenging 12-hour timezone shift between Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, the toll on drivers and teams is immense. Red Bull’s Dr. Helmut Marko spoke to Osterreich about the physical strain: “I’m slowly recovering. Las Vegas was absolutely at the limit. Nobody knew anymore whether it was breakfast or dinnertime. At the end, everyone was finished.”

Hamilton, however, resists the label of being “burned out.” He shared, “I’d rather not keep going into the season, but I think for me I’m just more emotionally drained at the end of the year.” He further elaborated on the difficulty of maintaining positivity amid the global challenges: “It’s obviously a very long season. I think really with all the negativity in the world as well, it’s been quite draining just to maintain a positive mindset through the year. To be able to compartmentalise and just go ahead with your job, I think, is difficult. You just try to remain positive through the darkest time.”
