Can Sargeant conquer his physical hurdles in Las Vegas?

Williams is grappling with a peculiar challenge as it prepares for the much-anticipated Las Vegas GP. The F1 team’s focus is on their young American driver, Logan Sargeant, who is currently navigating not just the race tracks and his unconfirmed 2024 deal but also some concerning physical issues.

Sargeant, a 22-year-old talent whose spot on the 2024 grid remains the only one yet to be confirmed, recently faced a significant hurdle in Qatar. Under the scorching heat, he was forced to retire from the race due to severe dehydration. Reflecting on this setback, Sargeant conveyed to Speed Week the extent of his struggle: “I hadn’t been feeling well all week, so that certainly didn’t help. I was extremely reluctant to bring the car into the pits because I didn’t want to let my team down. But I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

However, the challenges for Sargeant didn’t end there. During the most recent Formula 1 event at Interlagos, he encountered another alarming physical issue. In a distressing communication to his engineers, he reported a complete loss of feeling in a paralysed left arm.

James Vowles, the team boss at Williams, has since provided an update on Sargeant’s condition ahead of the Las Vegas race. Vowles believes the root of these problems lies in Sargeant’s seating arrangement within the car. “We think it was his seat,” he explained. The unique nature of the Interlagos track, which runs anti-clockwise, might have contributed to the issue. Vowles detailed the team’s response: “We’ve done some detail work on the position of the seat belts and the seat.”

Looking ahead to the Las Vegas event, Vowles expressed confidence in their remedial measures. “We believe the problem will not reoccur in Las Vegas,” he insisted.
