CEO visit: Is Thailand the next F1 destination?

This week, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has included Thailand in his latest series of international visits, indicating the nation’s emerging significance in Formula 1 expansion plans.

While a delegation from South Korea was recently engaging in discussions at Suzuka for hosting a Formula 1 race, Domenicali was expected to visit Korea this week “for further discussions.” Instead, the F1 CEO was found in Thailand, redirecting his attention towards potential opportunities there.

On Monday, instead of being in South Korea as many anticipated, Domenicali was spotted in Thailand meeting with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. According to reports from RMC Sport and Bloomberg, both Thailand and Formula 1 express a mutual interest in striking a deal to host a race.

Chai Watcharong, a government spokesperson, articulated the country’s vision for Formula 1’s presence in Thailand. “Basically, if F1 is to take place in Thailand, we want the grand prix to be on the roads,” he stated. He further mentioned, “We are currently working on this,” pinpointing Bangkok as the most probable location for the race.
