Closed door not stopping Andretti-GM: The fight for F1 heats up

The Andretti-Cadillac venture is hitting the gas on its Formula 1 ambitions, refusing to let F1’s red light halt their entry into the world’s premier motorsport series. Despite F1’s stance that Andretti’s next chance to join the grid is in 2028, when a bespoke GM engine is slated to be race-ready, the collaboration is not idling.

Jim Campbell, the motorsport boss at Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, remains undeterred, emphasizing their continued efforts to develop their F1 car. Speaking at the Daytona 500, Campbell tactfully sidestepped labeling F1’s rejection as “insulting,” instead highlighting the ongoing progress and optimism within the Andretti-GM partnership.

“Our joint teams are continuing to develop our car at pace,” Campbell affirmed, showcasing a blend of resilience and ambition. “So, that is where we are at. We’re not saying it’s easy, but between our two organizations, we have examples of where we have been successful in other motorsports categories. We feel great about our application.”

Despite gaining the nod from the FIA, the Andretti-Cadillac bid didn’t win the favor of F1’s commercial rights holder or the majority of the current team lineup. In response, Campbell disclosed, “So obviously they (F1) made their statement,” and added, “and we have asked for a follow up meeting with FOM and so we will work through that.”

Campbell contests F1’s implication that a 2026-ready Cadillac engine could have altered their bid’s fate. He clarifies the regulatory backdrop, stating, “When you register to be a power unit, there is a deadline to do that, and for us it was last June for 2028,” thereby pointing out the procedural adherence of their application. “We feel confident in our application and are asking for a meeting with FOM,” he reiterated, underlining their determination to challenge F1’s current verdict.
