Nyck de Vries, the Dutch driver who faced an abrupt end to his Formula 1 dream mid last sseason, speaks candidly about his experience and the emotional toll it took on him. After finally securing a full-time F1 seat with Alpha Tauri, de Vries found himself ousted for poor performance, replaced by the returning Daniel Ricciardo. This shift came as a jolt to de Vries, who had previously triumphed in Formula E in 2021 but struggled in the series’ recent 2024 opener.
In an interview with the Dutch magazine Formule 1, de Vries reflects on his journey. “I’m still the same person,” he asserts, noting that his hiatus from motorsport wasn’t extensive, but his media presence significantly dwindled. This reduction in media exposure was a conscious decision following his F1 departure. “As I said at the time, it really hurt for a while,” de Vries admits. “But that doesn’t mean everything stops. Life is a journey and that was a part of it.”
De Vries speaks about personal growth and perspective gained through his experiences. Despite the setback, he has chosen not to publicly criticize Red Bull, instead focusing on moving forward. “What’s the point of being negative or dwelling on disappointment for a long time? Or to feel sorry for yourself? That doesn’t help,” he says.
Reflecting on his brief F1 stint, de Vries acknowledges that there are things he might have done differently. “Yes, you know – I’m a perfectionist,” he remarks, revealing his constant drive for improvement. However, he appreciated the support and messages he received, even as he consciously stepped back from media attention. “I think media attention should be about the racing, the sporting achievements, and not about peripheral issues, the surrounding things,” he explains.
