Bernie Ecclestone, the former Formula 1 supremo, has once again stirred the F1 community with his annual Christmas card, known for its humorous and sometimes biting commentary on the sport’s latest happenings. This year, however, Ecclestone has deviated from his traditional witty cartoons, opting instead for a serene winter farm scene, sparking conversations among the F1 fraternity.
The 2023 card, devoid of Ecclestone’s typical humorous artwork, carried a straightforward message: “I am sorry that I could not think of anything exciting or strange that has happened this year that could be illustrated on my usual card. So may I wish you a peaceful and happy end of the year with 2024 bringing you all that is good for you and a more settled world. Bernie.” This shift in tone from the 93-year-old F1 legend is seen by some as a subtle critique of the current state of the sport.
Red Bull’s Dr. Helmut Marko interpreted Ecclestone’s card as a pointed remark about Formula 1’s transformation under Liberty Media’s stewardship, which some perceive as overly corporate, artificial and lacking genuine excitement. Speaking to Auto Bild, Marko commented with a hint of amusement, “What an announcement! We got a big slap from Bernie for Christmas.”
Ecclestone’s Christmas cards have been a staple in the F1 world, often reflecting and poking fun at the sport’s major themes and stories. In previous years, he has touched on topical issues like team politics, the pandemic, and cultural movements within the sport. This year’s departure from his usual style has not only surprised recipients but also offered a moment of reflection on the evolution of Formula 1 in recent years.
