Egos clash at Red Bull: Drivers at centre of internal turmoil

Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has shed light on what appears to be a simmering power struggle within the Red Bull camp. Rumors of discord between key figures emerged earlier this year, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the passing of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz. According to Albers, the rift between F1 powerbrokers Dr. Helmut Marko and Christian Horner has been brewing for some time.

Speaking to RTL GP magazine, Albers remarked, “The moment that dramatic event happened was also the first moment I said that we would have this ego battle,” he said, referring to Mateschitz’s late-2022 death. The dissolution of the close alliance between Marko and Mateschitz, both Austrian compatriots and long-time friends, marked a significant turning point.

Albers suggests that Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner may see this situation as an opportunity to assert his authority. “Horner has this focus on ruling alone, and we can tell now that he is working to attain that position,” Albers claimed.

The recent mid-season replacement of Nyck de Vries with Daniel Ricciardo appears to be at the heart of this power struggle. Albers speculates, “I have the feeling that Horner is clearly trying to get Ricciardo back alongside Max (Verstappen), even though (Sergio) Perez has a watertight contract.”

Albers also notes that the young talent Liam Lawson seems to be held in the background, possibly because Perez’s stature may make a return to Alpha Tauri less appealing.”That’s why they’re keeping (Liam) Lawson in the background,” he said, “because Perez’s ego is too big to go back to Alpha Tauri.”
