F1 conflict: FIA urged to launch legal counter-offensive

Amidst an intensifying dispute, numerous clubs and federations under the FIA umbrella are championing a proactive legal stance against recent accusations. This plea for retaliation comes in the wake of Susie Wolff, Toto Wolff’s spouse, lodging a criminal case in France. Her complaint was a direct response to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s contentious remarks, which implicated her in a conflict of interest and divulging confidential data.

Before this legal move, Ben Sulayem was embroiled in controversy for allegedly meddling with the judgments of F1 stewards and attempting to obstruct the approval of Liberty Media’s celebrated new F1 venue in Las Vegas, despite the FIA ethics committee absolving him of any misdeeds.

In a bold show of solidarity, a group of FIA member clubs and federations “of the Americas” have collectively signed a letter, vociferously defending Ben Sulayem. They assert that the charges levied against him are rooted in “self interest” and aimed exclusively at “the sole purpose of causing harm.”

Marked by the signature of Fabiana Ecclestone, South America for Sports’ representative and Bernie Ecclestone’s wife, among others, the letter not only defends Ben Sulayem but also advocates for the FIA to pursue its own legal measures in response. The signatories advise, “We will recommend that the FIA initiate legal action against those who, without cause, slander the FIA and its leadership,” underlining a united front against what they perceive as unwarranted defamation.
