F1 without Porsche: Inside the decision to focus elsewhere

In a definitive statement about Porsche’s future in Formula 1, Michael Dreiser, the director of motorsport sales for the iconic carmaker, has made it clear: Porsche won’t be joining F1’s grid “for the next few years” at least. This announcement comes amid a backdrop of heightened speculation and previous discussions, notably the advanced talks that took place between Porsche and Red Bull.

Porsche’s continued interest in F1 was hinted at over a year ago by their sports boss, Thomas Laudenbach. “The fact that the cooperation with Red Bull didn’t work out doesn’t mean Formula 1 isn’t interesting to Porsche anymore,” Laudenbach had declared. However, in a recent statement to Blackbook Motorsport, Dreiser echoed a similar sentiment while outlining Porsche’s immediate focus. “Motorsport will always be at the core of our brand identity. Formula 1 remains an interesting racing series for us,” he affirmed.

Despite this interest, Dreiser made it clear that Porsche’s current commitment is to their programs in WEC, IMSA, Formula E, and the F1 support category Porsche Supercup. In these arenas, Porsche is determined to “fight for overall victories,” as Dreiser put it, emphasizing the brand’s rich tradition and focus in these domains. “And we do not comment on speculation beyond that.”
