Inside the paddock: Predictions & projections for F1’s future

As the anticipation for the 2024 season builds, the Formula 1 world is already abuzz with discussions about what lies ahead in 2025.

“Red Bull have built a plane for this year,” joked former Red Bull member Jaime Alguersuari in an interview with La Sexta in Spain, alluding to Max Verstappen’s anticipated dominance and the Red Bull team’s formidable performance advantage.

“Max never makes mistakes, and that is why Red Bull will be unbeatable again,” Alguersuari emphasized, echoing the sentiment of many in the paddock.

However, Pedro de la Rosa offers a cautionary perspective, reminding fans and pundits alike not to discount the unpredictability of the sport. “You can’t start a season thinking there’s a winner already,” he cautioned in an interview with AS newspaper. “But Verstappen really is in spectacular form – you can see it from the on-board camera.”

Looking beyond the current season, all eyes are on Lewis Hamilton’s impending move to Ferrari in 2025, a decision that has sparked both excitement and skepticism.

“The problem is that he will arrive there at 40 years old,” observed former Ferrari driver Rene Arnoux in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. “And in sports, age affects results. Young people are physically stronger. I don’t think it’s possible to win the world championship at 40,” Arnoux concluded.

Meanwhile, the impending driver market ‘silly season’ and potential performance dynamics at Mercedes add another layer of intrigue to the 2024 season.

Gunther Steiner, now a pundit after his tenure at Haas, believes Hamilton’s professionalism will ease his transition to Ferrari, but acknowledges the potential challenge if George Russell outperforms expectations at Mercedes.

As speculation mounts, the focus also shifts to Mercedes’ next move, with Fernando Alonso’s contract talks with Aston Martin postponed to keep his options open.

“I think the question is not whether Fernando will go to another team,” de la Rosa reflected. “I think the question is whether Fernando is going to continue in F1. Those statements make him even greater in my eyes,” he added, highlighting Alonso’s loyalty amidst the shifting landscape of Formula 1.
