In Bahrain, Dr. Helmut Marko couldn’t hide his amusement when confronted with Fernando Alonso’s confident proclamation of another championship for Max Verstappen. Alonso’s assessment, based on pre-season testing, suggests a bleak outlook for competitors, excluding Verstappen, in the upcoming season.
Alonso’s prediction, as relayed by Marko to Kronen Zeitung, reflects a stark reality: “That’s realistic.” Marko acknowledged, hinting at Ferrari’s resurgence and the potential challenge from Charles Leclerc. He stated, “Seriously, I think Ferrari has become stronger and things could get tight in qualifying between Max and (Charles) Leclerc, who is one of the best qualifiers.”
However, the real astonishment lies in Red Bull’s continued dominance, achieved with a groundbreaking new car design reminiscent of Mercedes’ abandoned concept from 2022-2023. Marko observed, “The biggest surprise about Red Bull’s pre-season form, however, is not that the team remains in front – but that they’ve managed to do it with a new-concept car – reminiscent of the scrapped Mercedes concept of 2022-2023.”
Mercedes, now grappling with their own issues including ‘bouncing’, has seemingly adopted a similar concept, albeit with less success. George Russell admitted, “Mercedes now has a more 2023-like Red Bull concept car – with George Russell admitting it still hasn’t eliminated the team’s struggles with ‘bouncing’.”
Adding to the intrigue, rumors swirl around Red Bull potentially introducing an even more radical update at Suzuka in April, leaving pundits like Timo Glock to marvel at their audacity. Glock remarked, “In the end, it’s a slap in the face for Mercedes, who pursued the concept for two years and had to eventually abandon it because they didn’t understand it.”
For Ferrari and Mercedes, Red Bull’s leap forward serves as a stark reminder of their technological prowess. Carlos Sainz admitted feeling the pressure, noting Red Bull’s apparent advantage in development. Sainz expressed, “The first impression you get is that they are six months, a year ahead.”
Marko lauds Red Bull’s engineering team for their fearless approach, epitomizing the team’s ethos of pushing boundaries. He stated, “The word conservative simply does not exist in the minds of our engineers around Pierre Wache and Adrian Newey. That is also part of Red Bull’s DNA.” With competitors scrambling to keep up, Red Bull’s dominance seems assured as they continue to redefine the F1 landscape.
