Updated: Max Verstappen: From pole position to ‘different galaxy’

Max Verstappen has blasted off to a stellar start in the 2024 F1 season, leaving his rivals in the cosmic dust after a dominant win at the Bahrain GP and snagging the first pole position of the year. Fernando Alonso had already set the tone, suggesting that “19 drivers” knew their championship dreams were dashed before the season even started.

Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur, when probed about Alonso’s remarks, chose diplomacy, stating, “I’m not here to comment on Fernando’s words. Everyone does car racing as they want.” Yet, he couldn’t hide the reality of Red Bull’s leap forward: “It is certain that they are starting with a significant advantage. But only by putting them under pressure will they start to make mistakes. We must not leave here defeated. Never.”

The sentiment wasn’t as optimistic in the Mercedes camp, with their team boss conceding defeat even at this early stage: “Unfortunately, yes. Max wasn’t just in a different league today. He was in a different galaxy,” encapsulating Verstappen’s otherworldly performance.

Verstappen himself, aiming for his fourth consecutive world title, described his race as “perfect” and felt his car was “Just a little better” compared to last year. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, finished a distant second but was surprised by the lack of competition: “We were expecting definitely the people around us to be a lot stronger.”

Red Bull’s strategist, Dr. Helmut Marko, shared a cautious optimism, despite acknowledging their car’s sensitivity to wind and tire temperature issues: “I would like to agree with him, but our results on Thursday and Friday do not point in that direction… Apart from me, no one in the team believed that we would be on pole here.”

Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, urged caution in overinterpreting the results due to the unique track conditions, “You shouldn’t read too much into a race on a special track with a special asphalt.”

However, Marko hinted at the looming threat Red Bull poses: “We are still in the learning phase with the new car… The fact that we can already celebrate such success should worry them a little.”

Amidst rumors of an impending car upgrade, Marko’s enigmatic smile only said, “Let’s see,” leaving the paddock buzzing with anticipation. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Ferrari are left grappling with their own challenges, from unexpected engine overheating to tire wear issues, underscoring the uphill battle they face against Red Bull’s ascendancy.
