In a potential groundbreaking move for motorsport, Formula 1 and MotoGP are exploring the possibility of hosting a joint round of their respective world championships. This idea, initially floated last year by MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta, has continued to gain traction. Ezpeleta revealed that he had discussions with F1’s Stefano Domenicali about organizing “an F1 and motorcycling championship (round) on the same weekend at the same circuit.”
“We are thinking about it,” Ezpeleta said in April last year. “Stefano has spoken to me about a circuit in Madrid and I have spoken with the mayor of Madrid.” This statement has taken on new significance as, nine months later, the announcement of F1’s new Madrid GP for 2026 and beyond coincides with Ezpeleta reiterating the joint event’s feasibility.
Speaking to Europa Press on Tuesday, Ezpeleta, who shares a long-standing relationship with Domenicali, confirmed their ongoing discussions about this ambitious project. “We have been thinking about setting up such a project for a while,” he said, acknowledging the complexity of the endeavor. “It’s not easy, but you can’t get the idea out of your head. If it’s possible, we will do it.”
