Adrian Newey, celebrated as one of Formula 1’s most influential designers of all time, was seen in Italy this week, fuelling speculation about a potential move.
As Red Bull faces internal conflicts, speculation grows that key figures such as Newey, along with Dr Helmut Marko and even Max Verstappen, might be contemplating departures.
Following a rumoured disagreement with Christian Horner, a social media activity from Newey’s wife Amanda hinted at unresolved issues. She ‘liked’ a post that said, “Now’s your chance to tick off those regrets, Adrian.”
Despite his binding contract with Red Bull until 2026, the recent unrest within the team could influence Newey’s decisions.
Reports suggest that Aston Martin has extended a generous offer to Newey, to which Marko recently commented, “I don’t think it was the first offer he’s received and I don’t think it will be the last.”
Auto Motor und Sport’s Michael Schmidt provided insights into the situation, “Losing Adrian Newey would be just as great as losing Max Verstappen. And there is nothing he hates more than internal politics. Ever since things started going wrong at Red Bull, the competition has tasted blood.”
Newey previously acknowledged receiving solid offers from Ferrari, though he declined them to avoid relocating his younger family to Italy. However, Schmidt noted, “But at the end of his career, it would be the crowning achievement,” adding, “And it seems that this time he is serious.”
“Newey was recently spotted at the airport in Bologna.” The city is a mere hour’s drive from Ferrari’s F1 operations.
Should Ferrari succeed in acquiring Newey, and with the recent addition of Lewis Hamilton for 2025 and beyond, F1 legend Gerhard Berger foresees the beginning of a new era reminiscent of Michael Schumacher’s time at Ferrari. “With Hamilton instead of Michael,” Berger predicted, setting expectations for a transformative period at Maranello.
