Nico Hulkenberg: Dreaming of a top drive in another life

Nico Hulkenberg has cast doubt over the likelihood of securing a seat with a leading Formula 1 team for the 2025 season. Despite an impressive performance since his return to the sport with Haas, and new links with Audi-owned Sauber, the 36-year-old German’s prospects for joining a premier team appear slim.

Speaking to DPA news agency in Suzuka, Hulkenberg expressed a realistic perspective on his future opportunities: “There is very little hope for a top cockpit. Hopefully in the next life, but I don’t think that’s where the journey will go now,” he openly shared.

This admission might suggest Hulkenberg’s inclination towards remaining with Haas for another year, particularly in light of the team’s progress in 2024. “It feels like being in another world,” he described. “We can race on Sundays.”

Following a management shakeup at Haas, where Gene Haas replaced Gunther Steiner with Ayao Komatsu, there’s an anticipation of increased financial support for the team. Komatsu relayed Haas’s commitment to additional funding, conditional on the team’s effective use of its current resources. “Gene promised more money to me if you prove you are using the money you have efficiently,” Komatsu conveyed, as reported by Auto Motor und Sport in Japan. “It is up to us to give him the confidence that we are investing his money wisely.”

Meanwhile, Hulkenberg navigates the uncertainties of the 2025 driver market with a composed and focused mindset. “It’s not a distraction,” he affirms. “I’ve been through it all many times. If it distracts you, it’s bad for you and bad for the business. You have to be able to separate life on the track and conversations about the future.”

With the driver market’s ‘silly season’ commencing unusually early and many seats yet to be confirmed for 2025, Hulkenberg is prepared for the unfolding developments. “The balls are rolling in different places and there are a few interesting weeks ahead,” he acknowledges, yet remains unhurried. “But I don’t feel any reason to rush. The important thing is to stay focused.”
