Pirelli’s bold move to revamp F1: More stops, more drama

In an effort to enhance the spectacle of Formula 1 races in 2024, Pirelli is taking deliberate steps to inject more excitement into the sport’s on-track activities. With the third round of the new world championship highlighting the continued dominance of Max Verstappen and Red Bull, Pirelli is committing to a strategy designed to make each race more captivating.

Mario Isola, the head of Pirelli’s Formula 1 operations, conveyed to DAZN the new strategy behind selecting softer tyre compounds for the Melbourne race and beyond. He emphasized their intention, stating, “To make life difficult for the drivers and to have more spectacle on the track.” This move represents a departure from the norm, indicating a more “aggressive” approach to tyre selection.

Isola expressed a desire to shift away from single-stop strategies that dominated last season, aspiring instead for races that feature at least two pit stops. “We hope to see two stop races instead of one stoppers like last year,” he mentioned, signaling a significant adjustment in their approach to tyre strategies.

Acknowledging the challenges this could pose to teams, he noted, “For example, here we have seen some graining, which for them is a problem, but for us it means a bigger show.” This approach is grounded in the belief that varied tyre performance and wear rates can lead to more unpredictable and engaging races.

Isola also reflected on the performance differences among teams and drivers, pointing out that, “The cars and drivers are different and use the tyres in different ways.” He highlighted the Melbourne event as an example where the Red Bull team’s dominance was less pronounced, adding, “We saw here that the Red Bull does not seem so unbeatable. I hope that’s right, not for Red Bull but at least we will have a better show.”
