Post-race ban: Melbourne’s new rule to keep F1 fans safe

Melbourne has decided to prohibit spectators from accessing the Formula 1 circuit at Albert Park immediately after the race. This decision follows a concerning incident in 2023, where fans invaded the track before the cars had completed the final lap of the Australian Grand Prix. The situation led to an FIA investigation and a call for a thorough review of the security measures at the event.

Tom Mattram, the event’s operations manager, observed a change in the behavior of the crowd in the post-COVID environment. “We’re certainly finding in the post-COVID environment, we’ve got new and young fans that have come to the event and they’re not quite understanding the unsafe nature and dangers they put themselves in when they undertake these types of things,” Mattram said, highlighting the risks involved in such actions.

As a response to the FIA’s ongoing investigation, Melbourne’s race organizers have implemented a rule preventing spectators from crossing the barriers even after the race has concluded. This move aims to enhance safety and maintain order during the event.

The statement released by the organizers clarified their position: “Decisions regarding patron access to the track at the conclusion of future races will be made at a later date.”
