Liberty Media, the powerhouse behind Formula 1’s commercial empire since 2017, is reportedly setting its sights on acquiring MotoGP, the thrilling world of two-wheeled racing.
Speculation has been rife about a potential collaboration between F1 and MotoGP, with talks of a joint round of both championships gaining momentum. Now, Spanish business newspaper Expansion has cranked up the speculation, claiming that Liberty Media is deep in negotiations with Bridgepoint, the current owner of MotoGP’s organizing body, Dorna Sports.
Valuing MotoGP at a staggering $4 billion, Bridgepoint isn’t actively seeking a sale, but Liberty’s interest has piqued the curiosity of industry titans like Amazon, Netflix, and Disney, along with venture capital heavyweights CVC and KKR.
MotoGP supremo Carmelo Ezpeleta acknowledged the swirling rumors last December, telling La Repubblica, “The signs are always there. I confirm the rumors, but I would like to know who spreads them. Also because every day I receive two or three calls from credit institutions, asking me if it is true that we are for sale. The banks don’t want to buy – they offer themselves as intermediaries,” he revealed.
