The Hungaroring, one of Formula 1’s long-standing venues, is undergoing significant upgrades to retain its place on the F1 calendar. With its contract recently set to expire in 2027 and the circuit facilities no longer meeting the requirements of modern Formula 1, the track management embarked on a major renovation project.
Track boss Zsolt Gyulay acknowledged the need for improvement last year, stating, “The circuit facilities no longer meet the requirements of Formula 1.” His commitment to upgrading the garages, expanding the paddock, renovating the pit building, constructing a new main grandstand and HQ, and more, led to successfull renewal discussions with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
The Hungaroring duly secured its place on the F1 calendar until 2032, with Hungarian media hinting at the possibility of extending the stay even further. Domenicali commended the efforts, emphasizing the importance of such developments: “To see the commitment from the promoter to develop the facilities and further enhance the experience for fans is another important step and something we want to see all our events doing.”
Gyulay expressed pride in this achievement, especially considering the increasing global popularity of F1 and the growing competition among venues to join the calendar. “(This) signing marks a hugely significant achievement for us,” he said.
The first phase of the renovations has already begun during the off-season, involving demolition, excavation, and the erection of a crane tower as part of the pit building and paddock upgrades. “The redevelopment of the circuit is in full swing,” confirmed the Hungaroring. The entire project is slated for completion by 2026, marking a new era for the historic F1 circuit.
