Revealed: The 3 critical minutes after Schumacher’s skiing accident

As the tenth anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s tragic skiing accident approaches, a new light is being shed on the critical moments following the incident. German journalist Jens Gideon, in a series for broadcaster ARD, revisited the scene in the French Alps and brought forth insights from a local skiing instructor, Andre, who was one of the first to arrive at the scene in 2013.

Andre vividly remembers the condition in which he found Schumacher. “The helmet was crushed,” he recalls. “The camera was still on top of the helmet.” This detail paints a stark picture of the accident’s severity. The helmet camera footage, which has never been released publicly, could have provided more insights into those fateful moments.

Gideon and Andre report that Schumacher, now 54, was initially conscious after hitting his head on a rock. This may have led the first responders to underestimate the gravity of his condition. However, during the airlift to the hospital in the nearby town of Moutiers, Schumacher’s condition worsened rapidly. He lost consciousness and required intubation.

A critical decision was made upon landing in Moutiers. Almost immediately, it was decided to transfer Schumacher to the more specialized Grenoble hospital. Gideon highlights a poignant detail: “Schumacher could have been in Grenoble three minutes earlier,” he claims. This statement suggests that those three minutes might have been crucial in the initial treatment and perhaps the overall health outcome for the F1 legend.
