Rumours revving up: F1-MotoGP crossover event closer than ever?

Speculation has intensified about the potential for a groundbreaking weekend event that would see Formula 1 and MotoGP share the spotlight. This concept, aimed for the “medium term,” has sparked considerable interest among racing fans.

Liberty Media, which holds the commercial rights to F1 and has recently acquired MotoGP, is at the center of these accelerating rumours.

Carlos Ezpeleta, who plays a crucial role in MotoGP’s management and is the progeny of the series’ chief, Carmelo, has shed some light on the situation. He emphasized that while a joint F1-MotoGP event isn’t on the immediate agenda, it’s a possibility that hasn’t been dismissed for future consideration.

“The idea of hosting a joint event with Formula 1 and MotoGP is not something we’re actively pursuing at the moment, but it’s also not off the table for the medium term,” he disclosed to the Spanish press following the Liberty Media acquisition news.

Identifying a circuit capable of hosting both high-speed Formula 1 cars and the agile motorcycles of MotoGP presents a challenge, as not many venues are suited to both types of racing machinery.

Carlos Ezpeleta noted the existence of “a number of circuits” capable of accommodating both series, though he also admitted such tracks are few and far between.

He further clarified that while the project of a joint race weekend remains under consideration, it is not currently a focus of their planning efforts. “It’s a project we’re not sidelining, but at this stage, it’s not something we’re actively working on,” he added, indicating a cautious approach to the ambitious concept.
