Salo spills the secret: What does Hamilton know that we don’t?

Mika Salo, a former Ferrari driver, has shared intriguing insights on Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected decision to join Ferrari in 2025, suggesting there’s more beneath the surface of this high-profile switch. Salo, who unexpectedly stepped into the Ferrari lineup in 1999, hinted at undisclosed factors influencing Hamilton’s move. “I believe Hamilton knows something that the rest of us do not yet know,” he revealed to Iltalehti newspaper, igniting speculation about the underlying motives behind Hamilton’s decision, whether related to Ferrari’s car development or team dynamics.

Hamilton, who recently activated an exit clause to leave Mercedes, has stated his lifelong aspiration to race for Ferrari. Yet, Salo, with his experience and perspective, suspects additional revelations may still emerge. “It’s hard to assess how much Hamilton’s arrival will impact Ferrari,” Salo commented, emphasizing the complexity of F1 success and hinting at potential strategic shifts within the sport’s power dynamics.

Significantly, Salo speculated on the potential for Ferrari to strengthen further, mentioning, “There are a lot of question marks in Red Bull’s situation at the moment, for example, and there is no other car designer like Adrian Newey. If Ferrari could sign him too, I think they would have a winning team again.” This statement not only underscores the strategic considerations behind Hamilton’s move but also points to the evolving dynamics within Formula 1 teams, suggesting that Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari might be part of a larger, more intricate strategy aimed at revitalizing the iconic team’s fortunes.

The Finnish former F1 driver also reflected on the unique pressures of racing for Ferrari, sharing his personal ease with the spotlight during his tenure, “In my case, the media, fans and all the other commotion didn’t bother me. At least at that time, it was well taken care of there that the drivers focus on driving, and the rest of the people take care of everything else like media relations.”
