Theo Pourchaire: F1 destiny and patience

Theo Pourchaire, a rising star at just 20 years old, stands at a pivotal juncture. Dominating the leaderboard in his third Formula 2 season, Pourchaire confronts a reality tinged with uncertainty and unfulfilled aspirations. Despite his role as Sauber’s reserve driver, the young French prodigy faces 2024 without a concrete racing project, a testament to the unpredictable tides of motorsport.

Pourchaire’s voice carried a mix of determination and wistfulness as he spoke to RMC Sport in Abu Dhabi. “The people around me are planning ahead now.” Even as he gears up for another year as Alfa Romeo’s reserve driver, Pourchaire’s ambition burns brighter. “It’s good but for me I’ve already told them that it’s not enough. I want to race. I’m young and I know I have the ability to go further in this sport.”

His words reflect a racer’s heart, yearning for the thrill of competition over the solitude of simulators and the sporadic tests in F1. “Staying on the sidelines for a year doing simulators and a few tests in F1 is not enough,” he asserts with the clarity of one who knows his worth and the path he wishes to tread.

As the doors to another season in F2 close, Pourchaire contemplates his next move in the chess game of his road to Formula 1. World Endurance Championship, Super Formula in Japan, or Indycar – these are the arenas that beckon. “There are championships I can go to and we are in discussion,” he revealed, his gaze reflecting the myriad possibilities that lay before him.

Pourchaire’s aspirations soar beyond the endurance circuits. “Endurance is a very nice championship, but for me it is not the objective because it is not something that would bring me closer to F1.” His eyes are firmly set on the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1, and he seeks a path that carves him closer to this dream. “I want to do something that prepares me to go to Formula 1 in 2025, because I think I have the ability and I think I deserve my chance.”

Super Formula, though not widely publicized, captivates him with its high-speed cars and formidable competition. “It’s not very well publicised but the most important thing for me is that it is watched by Formula 1 teams,” he notes, aware of the critical eyes that could shape his future.

Indycar, with its higher profile but distinct style, also looms as a potential avenue. Pourchaire’s decision-making process is meticulous, considering calendars, opportunities, and the crucial balance of visibility and skill enhancement. “The Super Formula calendar fits very well with that of the third F1 driver. It’s a compromise that seems good to me but I would like to compete in a good team if I go there so I’m not forgotten.”

Pourchaire acknowledges this with a smile that belies the restless spirit of a racer on the cusp of greatness. “It’s very important,” he says, reflecting on the virtue of patience. “I know the opportunity will come one day but of course I would have liked it to come last year. Now this year it is still not there, but I believe in myself. I have to be patient.”
