Todt and current FIA president agree: Is Michael Masi returning to F1?

Jean Todt, the former FIA president, has recently sparked discussions around the possible return of the much-debated former race director Michael Masi to Formula 1. His comments come amid ongoing controversies surrounding pivotal moments in F1 history.

Todt’s recent support for Felipe Massa’s quest to challenge the 2008 world championship results, following the ‘crashgate’ scandal, has reignited discussions about the contentious 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi. Speaking to La Stampa, Todt stated, “There is no doubt that the Singapore GP was rigged and should have been cancelled.” His son Nicholas was Massa’s manager at Ferrari during that time.

The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which saw Max Verstappen clinch the championship over Lewis Hamilton in an ultra-tense and disputed climax, led to the eventual dismissal of Masi. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Todt’s successor as FIA president, has expressed reluctance to apologize for the decisions made in 2021, stating they were “before my time.”

In contrast, Ben Sulayem told the Guardian, “Ok, I will do the apology, but I will bring Michael Masi again.” He emphasized Masi’s harsh treatment post-race and indicated a potential return if it benefits the FIA. “The poor guy is a person who has been attacked and abused. If I see there is an opportunity that the FIA needs, and Michael Masi is the right person, I will bring him,” he said.

Todt, in a new interview with France’s L’Equipe, expressed several disagreements with Ben Sulayem, particularly his “character.” However, on the matter of Masi, Todt seems to align with Ben Sulayem’s perspective.

Reflecting on the Abu Dhabi incident, Todt clarified his role. “I didn’t fire him,” he stated, advocating for a thorough analysis of the events. “In that race, he made decisions together with his team – decisions that I could only respect,” Todt explained. He recalled his interactions with team principals Toto Wolff and Christian Horner at the time, emphasizing that only the stewards make race decisions.

Todt acknowledged Masi’s commendable track record prior to his exit. “Before my farewell, Michael Masi had done an impeccable job over the years,” he added.

As the F1 community speculates about Masi’s future, Todt’s comments leave the door open. “I don’t know if Michael will return sooner or later,” he said. “The new president can do what he wants.” He concluded by praising Masi as an “excellent professional” and noted that losing a championship in the last race is a part of the sport.
