Vesti v. Sargeant: Last ’24 F1 seat is seriously heating up!

James Vowles, Williams team boss, has been tight-lipped about confirming Logan Sargeant’s seat for next season. Despite his reluctance to officially confirm Sargeant’s position for 2024, Vowles has hinted that the young American driver might have done enough to earn a second season with the team. This speculation was further fueled by a radio message from Sargeant’s race engineer, Gaetan Jego, expressing enthusiasm about their next season together.

In response to media inquiries, Vowles has maintained a cautious stance. “It’s pointless to get ahead of things,” he stated to reporters, emphasizing Sargeant’s long-standing association with the Mercedes academy. Acknowledging Sargeant’s speed and potential, Vowles told Germany’s Sport1, “I think you can see signs that he’s doing exactly what we need him to do to earn his place. But we are not yet in a position where we can confirm that at this moment.”

Amidst this uncertainty, 21-year-old Danish driver Frederik Vesti, the Formula 2 runner-up, emerges as a possible – and probable – contender for the Williams seat. Vesti, strongly backed by Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ former colleague, has shown impressive form in the top feeder series, but his path to an F1 seat still remains unclear.

Gwen Lagrue, head of Mercedes’ driver development program, provided insights into Vesti’s journey. Speaking to Ekstra Bladet newspaper, Lagrue acknowledged the strengths and challenges of Vesti’s season. “Parts of his (F2) season were very strong,” Lagrue noted, contrasting Vesti’s six wins with F2 champion Theo Pourchaire’s single victory. However, he also pinpointed crucial moments that impacted Vesti’s trajectory, particularly races at Spa, Zandvoort, and Monza.

Lagrue’s comments also hint at broader discussions that took place over the summer, not only with Williams but also with Alfa Romeo-Sauber, who eventually chose to retain Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou. we didn’t lose the championship in Abu Dhabi. “We lost it at Spa, Zandvoort and Monza. It cost us some momentum and had an impact on the discussions over the summer.”

As Vesti prepares for another run in Mercedes’ 2023 car in Abu Dhabi, the future remains a topic of intense discussion. “After this, I will sit down with Fred and Dorte (Riis Madsen) and talk about the future,” Lagrue revealed, confirming the ongoing commitment to Vesti within the Mercedes family.
