Vesti’s F1 debut: Is he poised to overtake Sargeant?

The future of rookie American driver Logan Sargeant remains shrouded in growing speculation. Rumors are gaining momentum that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could be his last race in Formula 1 for the time being. The speculation has been fueled further by the rise of Frederik Vesti, a Mercedes junior and top Formula 2 driver.

Vesti, a 21-year-old Dane, raised eyebrows when he practiced in Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes on Friday, sparking talks about a potential debut with Mercedes-powered Williams in 2024, possibly Sargeant – the only driver on this year’s grid without a deal for next season.

When confronted with questions about his future and a contract for 2024, Sargeant himself seemed uncertain. “It’s a good question. Honestly, I don’t know,” he admitted in Abu Dhabi. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher added another layer to the unfolding drama. Speaking to Sky Deutschland, he shared his surprise at Williams boss James Vowles’ reaction when questioned about Sargeant’s future in Las Vegas. “I thought it’s probably because Vesti is on the wish list and they’re watching him closely here in Abu Dhabi,” Schumacher noted. “I hear that Williams will be allowed to see the data. Maybe they have to take the decision for next year now,” he added.

Vowles, now the team boss at Williams and still maintaining close ties with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, has been cautious about making any hasty decisions. “The decision will not be made this weekend in Abu Dhabi,” he declared, emphasizing the gravity of such a decision. “When you’re talking about the future of the team and the future of a young man, I would like to make the decision in peace, after the race weekend.”
