Zandvoort’s big makeover: Preparing for F1’s future

The Zandvoort circuit, a favorite in the Formula 1 calendar, is undergoing significant renovations during the off-season. With its current contract set to expire in 2025, the Dutch GP venue has been at the center of discussions regarding Formula 1’s capacity to accommodate new teams, such as the proposed Andretti entry. The primary concern? A shortage of garages.

However, it now appears that Zandvoort is addressing this issue head-on. The circuit is not just adding an eleventh garage but also a twelfth, along with an extended pit wall. Robert van Overdijk, the circuit boss, confirmed these enhancements, along with improvements to the pit and paddock facilities. All renovations are expected to be completed by the end of April.

One of the key upgrades includes the lengthening of the entire pit lane. This change comes in response to concerns from F1 teams about the lack of space during simultaneous pit stops. Van Overdijk explained, “We’re actually trying to separate the garages from each other to give everyone a little more space and be safer.”

The expansion isn’t just beneficial for the F1 teams. Van Overdijk also noted that the increase in garage numbers would extend the second floor of the pit building, offering more room for the Paddock Club. This enhancement will also serve the circuit well beyond the F1 season. “As well as F1, this additional space can also be used for the corporate events that we host during the year, so the investment will be recouped in a relatively short period of time,” he said.
